The Rural Telecommunity (telecenter, televillage) Center (RTC) is a new way of building empowered rural communities and networks of communities. By linking rural
with advanced telecommunications and technology it is now possible to create sustainable economic opportunities for rural communities. RTCs allow rural communities the ability to harness the same development strategies, broadband telecommunications, and advanced technology normally reserved for metropolitan areas.
The Rural Telecommunity Center concept was developed by Rural Health Futures, Inc. after seeing the struggles and frustration of rural communities seeking grant funds to help build the necessary technology infrastructure to enable rural stability and growth. The members of Rural Health Futures, Inc. realized there had to be an alternative to grant funds and to reaching deep into each community's pocket. The solution was a community RTC, a local technology business, tailored to a user's population.
