KAWNet was a proposed medical link system involving four rural communities in Northeastern Kansas; Onaga, Holton, Horton and Seneca and St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, Topeka. Rural Health Futures, Inc. worked with this group to prepare and submit a Rural Electrification Administration (REA) grant application in April 1993. The application was awarded approximately $500,000 in November 1993 to purchase Telemedicine equipment for all five sites. The application proposed a three-phase approach that included Integrated Clinical Records/Toxicology, Teleradiology and Interactive Teleconferencing based Medical Consultation/Education. The primary use of this network is a medical link to coordinate patient care and provide interactive physician consultation and patient education.
