Eddie Howe has been urged to use today’s League Cup final to speak out about abuse and executions in Saudi Arabia.
“A year ago, you committed yourself to educate yourself about the human rights situation in Saudi Arabia,” read a letter from Reprieve, the European Saudi Organization for Human Rights (ESOHR) and the human rights group ALQST, seen by The Post.
“Many fans and human rights groups implored you to speak out about the ongoing death penalty crisis in the Kingdom. But since then we have heard nothing from you or your players on the issue.”
The letter stated that since the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund acquired Newcastle in October 2021, Saudi Arabia has executed 157 people.
Newcastle are understood to have received the letter but did not respond when asked if it had been handed to Howe.
“As Newcastle United manager, you have a duty to the Newcastle community. We understand you may have concerns about getting involved in politics and geopolitics, but human rights are more important than that. If we don’t speak out when we see these rights violated
, then our silence sends the message that these violations do not matter to us.
We urge you to respond to the concerns of fans and human rights groups.
You can use your platform to raise awareness about the human rights situation in Saudi Arabia, and there’s never been a better time to do it than this weekend when the eyes of the world are on your club.
