According to the latest report from the famous Times reporter Tom Roddy, Chelsea are more and more optimistic about Cantor signing a new contract and believe that he will not leave when his contract expires in the summer.
The 31-year-old World Cup winning midfielder will be free to talk to overseas clubs from January 1 and sign an expected contract, when he enters the last six months of his contract with Chelsea. But the West London club believes that recent fears that Cantor may eventually leave have eased and that he is close to committing himself to his future.
Chelsea have also made an offer for fellow midfielder Jorinho, who is in the same position as Cantor and whose contract expires at the end of the season.
The Times revealed in August that Paris Saint-Germain was one of the clubs that had been watching Cantor’s situation at Stamford Bridge and had tried to buy the midfielder in 2018. Cantor, who had previously become the club’s highest-paid player, signed a new five-year contract with a weekly salary of about £300000 that summer.
He turns 32 in March and has not played for Chelsea since he underwent hamstring surgery in August and has suffered injury setbacks in his recovery. Cantor’s injury record over the past few years has been considered by Chelsea in an offer for a contract extension.
The club’s new signing team has identified midfield as a key area for Chelsea’s improvement, with Enzo Fernandez, Bellingham and Declan Rice all top targets for the next two windows. But Chelsea are hoping to keep Cantor and Jorinho after next summer and they believe both are likely to stay.
