the European Court of Justice said in a statement on the European Super League case today that FIFA-UEFA requires approval for the establishment of any new tournament, which is in line with EU competition law.
FIFA said in a statement that it welcomes the comments made today by Lantos, the general defense lawyer of the European Court of Justice, in which he confirmed the status and legality of FIFA and UEFA in approving any new football match.
For the same reason the General Counsel is of the view that sanctions can be imposed on competitions that do not meet the criteria for authorization. FIFA also welcomes the Director-General’s recognition of FIFA’s exclusive marketing rights to its organization of international competitions.
Finally, FIFA also welcomes the Attorney General’s recognition of the special nature of sport, including the pyramid structure, which preserves the value of sport and the nature of open games in which all can participate, as well as the principles of promotion and demotion, competitive balance and financial solidarity.
