According to the latest report by Rob Dawson, a famous reporter from ESPN Manchester, the source told ESPN that Manchester United manager Eric Tenhag told the club that he was disappointed that they could not sign Cody Garkerpo, but he still hoped to find a short-term replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo in January.
The imminent move to Liverpool comes as no surprise to Tenhag, who, after all, shares an agent with the PSV Eindhoven striker, but it is disappointing that the 23-year-old will move to Anfield for 50 million euros, not Old Trafford.
A source told ESPN that Manchester United had not made a formal offer for Gakpo because they could not match the financial package offered by Liverpool.
Tenhag expressed sympathy for United’s budget constraints after spending more than expected in the summer, but asked the club to evaluate short-term options to fill the gap left by Cristiano Ronaldo, who agreed to terminate his contract during the World Cup.
With little money to pay the transfer fee, Manchester United are considering a short-term loan deal until the end of the season.
A source told ESPN that Felix could leave Atletico Madrid, but the Spanish club wanted a substantial loan fee, plus an agreement to pay his salary, which could bring his contract to close to 22 million euros for six months.
Finally, if Atletico are willing to listen to the loan offer, Alvaro Morata is still an option.
