According to reporter Rob Harris, FIFA President Invantino said at a press conference that FIFA is considering a “FIFA World Series” to be attended by four national teams from different continents.
Invantino attended a press conference in which he praised the World Cup in Qatar as “the best World Cup in history”.
Invantino confirmed that FIFA’s revenue in the four-year World Cup cycle was $7.5 billion, an increase of $1 billion over the previous four years, and is expected to rise to $11 billion in the next four-year cycle.
Invantino said that the concept of the “FIFA World Series” is taking shape, with four national teams from different continents playing friendlies on the even-numbered March International match Day (10 days).
In addition, FIFA will host the Club World Cup, which will be attended by 32 clubs in January 2025, every four years. The tournament model was originally planned to be launched in China in 2021, but was temporarily cancelled. The 2022 Club World Cup will be held in Morocco in February 2023, when seven teams will compete, including Champions League champion Real Madrid. Plans for the Women’s Club World Cup are under way, but Invantino did not disclose details.
By 2025, the two international match day windows originally scheduled for September and October will be merged into one, with four national team games at the end of September and the beginning of October. The site of the 2030 World Cup will be decided in 2024 and the bidding rules will be announced early next year.
Invantino, who confirmed that he could serve as president of FIFA until 2031, said this was his first term and that he could serve three consecutive terms, excluding part of the three-year term from 2016 to 2019 (because Blatter stepped down).
