November 30th The Athletic UK correspondent Adam Crafton wrote a column in Doha with the title– Mbappe has found harmony with France, but tension lies ahead at PSG and a sale could follow
(the following is an excerpt from the column)
As a result, he became the highest-paid footballer on the planet. At the time, club sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity to protect their relationship, said his annual salary would be about 40 million euros (35 million pounds), while insisting that if signing fees, wages and portrait rights were taken into account, the offer is slightly lower than Madrid’s offer in the negotiations.
Other reports reported higher numbers, with the New York Times reporting that Mbappe received a signing bonus worth $125 million (104 million pounds).
It was such an astonishing success for Paris Saint-Germain that they even enlisted the help of French President Emmanuel Emmanuel Macron to persuade Mbappe to stay.
But behind the scenes, Mbappe’s image makes people disillusioned with him. Disagreements emerged in the Paris Saint-Germain dressing room, with Mbappe and his close friend Ashraff Hakimi separated from the Spanish and Latin American groups in the dressing room. In the game against Montpellier, he also had a public dispute with Neymar over who should take a penalty, while Mbappe gave up the counterattack when he did not receive his favorite pass.
Mbappe was also outraged by speculation that Mbappe’s contract renewal agreement included that he would have a say in the club’s major decisions, such as transfer, head coach and sporting director.
In October, the news that Mbappe wanted to leave, which was exclusively revealed in the major media, pushed the tension between the parties to the best part. Although Mbappe publicly denied that it had anything to do with him and his team, speculation about where Mbappe will be happy in the future has not disappeared.
For Paris, Mbappe’s situation has been a source of confusion. According to the French club, the player decided to give up Real Madrid and renew his contract with Paris. So shortly after the contract extension, the melodrama that followed was boring. And this situation is likely to continue.
The reason is also simple: Mbappe’s three-year contract extension is actually 2: 1 (which has been repeated in the team newspaper), and the option for the third year must be agreed by both parties. So as things stand, Mbappe’s contract has only one year left at the end of the season.
Some sources who would not disclose internal discussions expect Mbappe’s transfer market to reappear in the summer of 2023. Paris Saint-Germain is determined not to lose the player on a free transfer, which was one of the main motivations for them to invest in Mbape’s contract extension last summer.
The humiliation is particularly serious for Paris Saint-Germain, especially because the French club rejected an offer of 180 million euros from Real Madrid last summer, which is evidence that they want to keep the player. The Qatari club also hopes to retain arguably the best young player in the world ahead of the World Cup in Qatar.
Liverpool and Manchester United have been rumoured to be linked with Mbappe, but Liverpool have recently invested heavily in attack, most notably the renewal of Salah’s contract and the acquisition of Uruguayan striker Nunez last summer. Their main spending next summer will be in the team’s midfield.
At the same time, Manchester United will always keep an eye on the best talent on the market, but are not expected to participate in Mbappe’s battle for the moment.
Real Madrid are still interested in Mbappe, while Paris Saint-Germain keeps Mbappe partly because the Frenchman is still young and can continue to play for the club if he wants to continue to play for the club.
For France, they may once again welcome a national hero at the World Cup. But for Paris, uncertainty about Mbappe’s future remains.
